About SUIZAN’s Chisel (About Japanese Wood Chisel)

SUIZAN chisels are called “Oiire Nomi” in Japan. They are used for construction work such as mortising, shaving, chopping, paring, and a variety of other woodworking tasks.

Designed for two types of use

“Oiire Nomi” is a versatile chisel that can be used either for hammering or for chiseling by hand.

It has a metal ring (steel hoop) at the end of the handle for hammering. To enable hand cutting, the blade is slightly thinner than those designed for hammering only.

Razor Sharp Superalloy Blades

This superalloy blade is heat and oxidation resistant.

Hardened using traditional techniques and sharpened by skilled craftsmen, the blade is razor sharp.

Warm Oak Wood Handle

The handle is made of strong and durable white oak. It fits comfortably in the hand and is easy to hold.

Metal ring with traditional ingenuity

A steel hoop (metal ring) is attached to prevent the wooden handle from cracking when struck with a hammer.

It was designed for long, comfortable use and has remained unchanged to this day.

How to Cut a Morise

Draw a layout line and an inside line.

Make a preparatory mortise.

Chisel like a “V”. Chop in the order of 1 2 3.
